Solar may be an excellent option for your home and family, especially for families concerned with the rapid increase of power company rates. Many families don't realize the "WHY", meaning why would I have solar panels installed on my home? It is important to understand that typical residential grid solar systems feed energy back to the grid (PNM in most cases). Basically, you are producing your own electricity, but your home does not actually use the electricity that you produce. Your home still uses grid power, just like it always did. The electricity that you produce is sent back to grid, and the power company "credits" you for the electricity that you produce. The goal (in most cases) is to produce the same, or more energy than what you use. But WHY? The primary reason most people buy solar is because your home and family become "rate immune". Meaning, rate increases will not drive up your electric bill, because you are producing your own energy to offset the usage. We all know rates will continue to climb. Secondarily, many homes and families are going solar to reduce their carbon footprint and help improve our environment. Grid power is still mainly driven by coal, which requires a lot of water, and also puts out a lot of emissions, which are not great for our air. Lastly, a good number of homes and families greatly benefited from the federal and state tax credits.

Solar is an investment, but you might want to consider what you are already paying for electricity versus what a solar loan would cost you. In most cases, you end up paying less for a solar loan that your energy bill costs, and the solar basically eliminates the energy bill, so it can be a win-win situation.

What is Solar Air Conditioning? First of all, it's "not" an AC System powered by solar.... There are two applications for solar air conditioning, first for people that have heat pumps (all electric heating and cooling), a solar system can be designed to offset just the heating & cooling portion of your bill, which in most cases is about half of your total electric bill annually. There is another application which has been growing in popularity, with the rise of battery technology for the home. Some families have a solar system designed which will exclusively charge a solar battery, and that battery runs just the AC system, day and night. So not only does it remove the cost of running your heating and cooling from your bill, but also, if there is a power outage, your home remains comfortable summer or winter. Battery technology has come a long way, but we would not encourage a homeowner to attempt off-grid battery for the whole home, not yet at least, although such systems do exist.
